Midi lidi (CZ)

The trio of the filmmaker Petr Marek, the actor and musician Prokop Holoubek and the jewellery designer Markéta Lisá (replaced by Tomáš Kelar in 2011) was built on the remnants of the emo/elektro/gothic bands Krásný stěhovák Gerard and Sexuální nábytek. The band has been in existence since April 2006, and their music oscillates around the boundary between electro/experimental/IDM with a strong flavor of dance and energy. Eccentric lyrics sung in Czech complement the music. VJ Filip Cenek, Magdalena Hrubá, and VJ Kolouch participate in the band’s live performances and they also prepare the graphic material. The band has won a Czech Lion Award for the score to the movie Protector.

Midi Lidi’s debut album Čekání na robota (Waiting for the Robot) was released in 2007; with Hastrmans, Tatrmans & Bubáks following in 2009. The latest album is 2011’s Operace “Kindingo!”. Petr Marek said at the time: “We wanted to make a lovely silly dance record, but all the time I was wishing that there would be songs – and it worked.” The latest feat of Midi Lidi was at last year’s album of covers of Mňága a Žďorp. Midi Lidi made the track Pete Best, by collecting all typical features of Mňága music and making it a whole new track. Their act is considered as the best contribution of the large project.
